What is Counselling?

My counselling in ReadingCounselling is an opportunity to have a different kind of conversation. Two people meet for weekly sessions (or more frequently) and talk and listen; however, unlike social conversations, the emphasis is on one person - you - as you address the problems and difficulties you are experiencing.

I don't tell you what to do or how to live your life, so if that is what you want, counselling is not for you. However, my role is to help you explore your thoughts and feelings so you can begin to make sense of your life and relationships in a way that gives you the confidence to change.

The relationship between us is central to the success of the work. Feeling safe is essential so that trust can develop between us. That is why it is important we meet every week at the same time in the same place and why I will listen with openness and without judgement.

You may be seeking help with a specific problem, or experiencing generalised anxiety or unhappiness. You may have an idea about the root of your problems, or be in the dark about why you feel as you do. Whether your difficulties are recent or have lasted for years, I will try to help in a way most appropriate to your needs. As an experienced professional, I can help you through the sometimes scary process of change.
